What is worship, and what is the point of it? Think about the millions of churches that gather on Sundays and Wednesdays. Some have bands, some have an orchestra, some have a choir, and they're lifting their hands and praising God. What is the point of worship?
To worship means to ascribe worth to something. Think of the word "worth-ship." When I worship someone, I'm saying they're worthy of worship. If I say that thing or that person is worthless, they're not worthy of worship, right?
Then They Worshiped
Our verse is beautiful because it reminds us how the Israelites have just been delivered. They've crossed the Red Sea. The Egyptians just drowned, and they're on the other side, and they're singing a song of deliverance. Here's one word that will give us some context. If we go back to Exodus chapter 15, the word is then. It says, "Then Moses and the people of Israel sang this song to the Lord."
That word then is very important because God just acted. They just crossed the Red Sea. Then they worshiped. My question to us today is simple: What is your response to God's goodness in your life? Here's what just happened. God acted. They worshiped.
Is your response a heart of gratitude? Or maybe you're looking at your life and you're like, my situation hasn't changed. Why would I lift my hands? Why would I open my mouth and worship God? Maybe you're even angry at God, wondering if He's ever going to come through.
When We Worship in the Waiting
Here's my encouragement to you: Worship in the waiting. You know something happens when we worship while we wait. Very often when we worship, when we spend time with the Lord, it's not that our situation changes. God actually starts to change us, but our job is to worship while we wait and trust that the results—they belong to the Lord.
The reason I love this verse is because even though it's so simple, "The Lord will reign forever and ever," picture a bunch of people singing this song. Regardless of our political climate, regardless of what's going on in our lives, we're saying, Lord, You're going to reign forever and ever. I acknowledge that You are in control, even though my situation hasn't changed yet. I acknowledge that You are on the throne. You are fully in control.
That's what they did. They're acknowledging, You're fully in control of my situation. You just delivered us. If God can do it for them, He can do it for us.
I don't know where you're at today, but my encouragement to you: keep your eyes on the Lord and keep worshiping in the waiting.
