We have a brief verse today. It's one that says something that we have heard over and over again. The Bible says something like this over and over again in the Old Testament and in the New Testament.
Why is this truth repeated over and over again? When something is repeated like this, it is because we're a forgetful people. There are things that we need to know deep down, and there are things we need to understand. There are things that we are prone to forget, and we need to read and be reminded of them, because they are essential for life.
That means it's important when you hear something over and over again.
Understanding Trust
What are these simple words that we're tempted to just read over and say, yeah, yeah, I've heard that before? Let's break it down.
What's the first word? Trust. What does it mean to trust? To trust means to rely on. To lean on. To take hold of. To place faith in.
We all have people and things that we trust in on an earthly level. We have people that have earned trust. We might trust in our job. Trust in our circumstances. Trust in our achievements. Maybe our successes from which we might get something out of.
Here we're called to trust in the Lord. We are to trust in Him only.
Full Trust in God Alone
The Bible never calls us to trust in anything else or to entrust ourselves to anyone else when it comes to full trust and reliance. The only anchor for that, that will never fail us, is the Lord. That’s why we're told to trust in the Lord.
When do we trust in the Lord? "Trust in the Lord always." Always. What that means is that not only looking forward will we be able to and should trust in the Lord forever, but it means that every point along the way we are always trusting in God.
Whatever we're relying on, whatever we're putting our faith in, it only belongs in, belongs to, and is appropriate—attached to the Lord Himself.
Why Should We Trust?
There are many reasons that we could come up with as we read through Scripture of why God is the One that we should trust in. There's one that's brought up here, and it's brought up so many other times.
We're told: "Trust in the Lord always, for..." Now we're going to hear a reason: Why should I trust in the Lord?
The Eternal Rock
For the Lord God is...There are so many things that could be said there, and so many things that are said about God. Here we're told: "Trust in the LORD always, for the LORD God is the eternal rock."
What do you think of when you think of an eternal rock? What does Isaiah want us to think of when we hear the word "rock"?
A Picture of Permanence
That one word—eternal—is a good word. If you've ever seen a big rock, it sure looks like it has been there forever. I grew up in California, spent a lot of time up in Lake Tahoe, and Lake Tahoe is surrounded. It's right in the middle of the Sierra Nevada mountains, and it's surrounded by granite.
You will find these rocks that are not like little pebbles that you see on the beach. These are massive stones. These are massive rocks. That's what you should have pictured in your mind right now. They look like they have been there forever.
Unchanging and Immovable
There are some qualities of that rock that are very applicable here. For one, they are unchanging. You go back year after year after year, and everything else in the environment looks different—everything that man has made, of course, but the trees, the sand, the dirt, the water—everything changes except that rock. It looks and is immovable.
What could possibly move that rock? What could possibly change that rock? What could possibly move God? What could possibly change God?
The answer, of course, is nothing.
God Is Ultimately Reliable
Therefore, He is the ultimate reliable. He is the ultimate to be trusted in. God is not a man, as the book of Numbers says, that He should change His mind or lie. He is God. He alone is God and worthy of our trust.
We hold on to this verse. We believe it. We act on it.
