When life begins to fall apart and feel like it's caving in around you, where do you reach first? Where do you put your trust? Not what you say, but where do you actually reach? Because that's a very important conversation that must be had. It's precisely where today's Verse of the Day takes us.
It's Jeremiah chapter 10, verse 6. It says, "LORD, there is no one like You! For You are great, and Your name is full of power."
Understanding the Context
It's easy to look at the words Jeremiah chose to communicate to us, but in order to really understand what he's talking about and what he's saying, you must understand the context of this verse itself. See, Jeremiah, often known as the weeping prophet—I kind of consider myself like him in many ways—it's because he had a soft spot in his heart for people. I have a soft spot in my heart for people like you. Because you are God's creation, whom He destined for great things: to go, to live, to love, to build, to serve.
He has this beautiful plan for you. But Jeremiah wrote this as he was speaking to the people about idolatry. Be careful with these idols that will pop up, that will try to take captive your mind and your heart so that you reach for those things rather than the one true God. That's why he said, "LORD, there is no one like You. For You are great, and Your name is full of power."
What Is an Idol?
There's no one like God, and this is important. What is an idol? one might ask. Anything that we revere or place in the place of God—where God should be on that pedestal. Anything we put on that pedestal that has now become an idol.
He's not talking about for us in today's world—not a lot of people having huge golden statues and falling on your knees and groveling today. No, but money can very easily become your idol if you reach for that before you reach for God. Maybe it's your job, your career, your relationships. As soon as you hit a crisis, the first thing you should do is know that God already has an answer for you. You might call your friends first before you consult with God, or your family, your parents, your children, your siblings.
Where Do You Turn?
Where do you turn when adversity hits and strikes? This is important because I myself found myself many a day in my journey, turning exactly to friends. Man, I just don't know what to do. Can you help me, please? Guess what? That didn't work out so well for me. Thinking money was the answer: Oh, man, I'm so glad I've been focusing so hard on savings. I'm so glad I was able to build that thing up. Guess what? One, two punches. Just like that my entire savings was drained. Now what? Now where do you turn?
Sometimes we are tempted to be frustrated. But we need to understand a truth about God. When I learn to stop turning and putting other things in the place where God should be and understand He is good, there's nobody like Him. He alone is good and His name is full of power. When I made that choice, everything for me changed.
Put God Back on the Throne
The question for you today that I posed in the beginning: where are you reaching? If you've been reaching for anything other than God, we must make a shift today and put God back in that seat, back on the throne, fully trusting in Him—His pleasing and perfect plan for your life.
If you are willing to do that, everything changes. If you keep the main thing the main thing, not allowing idols to replace Him, but staying fully focused on His Word and His goodness, His greatness, then everything in your future is going to look better. It's going to look brighter and you will live out your God-given mission on this earth.
