Close your eyes for a second. What image comes to mind when you think of the Holy Spirit?
Perhaps it's a soft and gentle dove. Maybe a flame?
Ancient Celtic Christians pictured something different. They had a name for the Holy Spirit: “An Geadh-Glas.” The phrase means “The Wild Goose.”
In his book by the same title, Mark Batterson writes that the Spirit "cannot be tracked or tamed." There's danger and unpredictability in the way God moves.
The Holy Spirit is not a harmless pet you can coax into your hand. The Spirit is wild, flying where He wants, when He wants, and sometimes leaves you scrambling to keep up.
Embodying this imagery, "Wild Rushing Wind" is the first release from SEU Worship's upcoming project. The song was recorded live at SEU Conference 2026, a gathering that turned into ten days of continuous worship and prayer on Southeastern University's campus.
The band shared, "We hope that as people listen, they feel a renewed sense of hunger and expectation stirring within them, an anticipation for what God is doing and a deeper desire to encounter His presence.”
Inspired by Jesus’ words in John 3:8, the song doesn't ask listeners to understand the Holy Spirit. It asks them to follow His moves!
I want you to picture the room. A small group of believers is gathered, waiting and not entirely sure what will happen next. What happened next in Acts 2 was certainly not what they were expecting!
“Suddenly there was a sound from heaven like the roaring of a mighty windstorm, and it filled the house where they were sitting. Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them. And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Spirit gave them this ability.”
Acts 2 embodies the line from verse 1 where SEU Worship wrote, “The rain is coming, hear the sound.”
When the Spirit shows up, He doesn't knock meekly and wait to be let in. He often arrives like weather!
Making sense of God’s shocking and surprising movements has been stumping men and women for centuries. Nicodemus, an expert Hebrew teacher, came to Jesus at night with questions. He wanted a concrete explanation of Jesus’ teaching.
Jesus gave him a metaphor about the wind instead. “The wind blows wherever it wants. Just as you can hear the wind but can't tell where it comes from or where it's going, so it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”
SEU Worship sings about the Holy Spirit’s move, noting in the pre-chorus that “there is no containing it.”
You can feel the wind on your face. You can hear it move through the trees. But you can't chart the wind’s path, and you certainly can't tell it where to go next.
That's what Jesus describes to Nicodemus! The Spirit is not something you manage or something you predict. You feel the Spirit moving and learn to follow, even when you can't explain where the Spirit is taking you.
Nicodemus came looking for a system, but Jesus introduced him to mystery.
Decades later, Paul wrote to Timothy from a prison cell, watching the young pastor he loved start to shrink back from what God had called him to.
His charge wasn't complicated.
This is why I remind you to fan into flame the spiritual gift God gave you. (2 Timothy 1:6, NLT)
SEU Worship echoes this verse in the bridge when they sing, “Holy Spirit, fan the flame.”
Together, these lyrics echo what the Scripture reveals. The wind goes where it wants, but here Paul tells Timothy to do something. Fan the flame. Stay near it. Don't let it go untended.
The Spirit is wild, but He's not asking you to sit back and watch from a distance. He's asking you to stay close enough to feel the heat. Keep showing up, so He can keep breathing on whatever ember He's already lit in you.
Are you where you thought you'd be by now? I'm certainly not! Not even close! I'm not living where I pictured, nor am I doing the work I expected. My life has been full of turns I didn't choose and couldn't have predicted if I tried.
That's what it looks like to follow a “Wild Goose!” You don't get a map. You don't get a five-year plan emailed to you from Jesus’ Gmail account. Instead, we experience “a wild rushing wind” that moves where He wants, when He wants, and asks you to move with Him.
So, what if you stopped trying to predict what God will do next? What if you stopped trying to expect the Spirit to operate in safe and comfortable ways? The Spirit was never meant to be tracked or tamed, and neither is the life He leads you into.
Follow where God is leading. Surrender to where He's already working. Trust His plan even when you cannot see it all.
