Trusting God with All Your Heart
Life really boils down to this question: do we trust God? You might be watching and wondering, do you understand the pain that I'm in right now? Do you understand the season that I'm in right now? Are you just going to tell me to trust God? I've had that before, when I was going through a terrible time in my life of deep depression, and I had a friend who told me, "Just trust God."
I want us to think about this, because the writer of Proverbs tells us to trust in the Lord with all of our heart. All of us are trusting in something, no matter what we're navigating through. At the end of the day, do we trust that God is faithful? That God is gracious, that He's good, that He's just? What do we believe about God? Our view of God matters, no matter what we go through.
Including God in Your Planning
You might be wondering, well, how do I place my trust in the Lord? I think one of the most practical ways to trust in the Lord is to include God in your planning. I want you to think about this: whenever we make plans for our lives, do we include God? It's okay to plan, but don't take God out of the planning.
I think the absence prayer in our life shows that we don't trust God, because it takes humility to pray and to say, God, I cannot do this on my own.
Trust Without Conditions
The writer of Proverbs wants us to understand that when we trust in the Lord, we don't just kind of trust Him—it says, trust in the Lord with all your heart. I'm not saying, God, if You do this for me, then I'll place my trust in You. No, no, no. My hope and my trust is in the Lord.
Then he says, "Seek His will in all you do." I'm seeking the Lord's will, no matter what decision I'm making. My posture is this: God, I want to honor You. That's what it means to seek His will. God has given us His revealed will, which is the Word of God. When we make a decision, or when we're navigating through a storm, our posture should be, Lord, I want to please You.
A Promise Worth Holding Onto
Then it says He will show you which path to take. His Word will be a lamp unto our feet. The promise of the Gospel is this: it's not that the straight path will never have any pain. In fact, God has never promised us a life of ease and comfort. What He promised us is that He will be Emmanuel—God with us.
